You brought up a very good point. Seminaries train pastors to begin with a passage of Scripture, and go through it verse-by-verse, explaining what it means.
I like to think of it as going into a bakery when you are hungry, hoping to get something to eat. But instead, they explain all about planting seeds, harvesting, milling the grain into flour. But they never get around to showing you how mix the flour with various ingredients in order to bake the bread so you can satisfy your hunger. You leave just as hungry as when you entered the bakery.
What I do is to begin with a need that many (most?) people have, and demonstrate how to mix together a “recipe” from Scripture, transforming the raw material into spiritual “bread” that you can “eat”, and in so-doing nourish your soul so as to strengthen you for victory over that need. (I hope this makes sense to you.)
