He Will Keep Me Safe In His Dwelling

I just finished today’s reading from “Still Higher for His Highest”, a book of daily devotional readings by Oswald Chambers. Here’s what I read:

“Set Upon a Rock”

For in the day of trouble he will keep me safe in his dwelling; he will hide me in the shelter of his tabernacle and set me high upon a rock. Then my head will be exalted above the enemies who surround me; at his tabernacle will I sacrifice with shouts of joy; I will sing and make music to the Lord. (Psalm 27:5-6)

In our spiritual life God does not provide pinnacles on which we stand like spiritual acrobats; He provides tablelands of easy and delightful security. Recall the conception you had of holiness before you stood where you do today by the grace of God. It was the conception of a breathless standing on a pinnacle for a second at a time, but never with the thought of being able to live there. But when the Holy Spirit brought you there, you found it was not a pinnacle, but a plateau, a broad way, where the provision of strength and peace comes all the time, a place where it is much easier to live than lower down.

As a “writer-in-training”, I am in awe of a writer who is able with so few words to articulate concepts such as this one. I realize I have much to learn.

But… I am at the same time filled with joy, delighted, and encouraged because I understand the lesson and can identify with him. I live on that plateau!

As I writer I am humbled and determined; as A Christian I rejoice and am glad!
